Biden Orders AI Infrastructure Development

By Patrick Mclean|15th January 2025

Incumbent President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to build at least three new AI infrastructure centres.

The order directs federal agencies to push development of a large-scale AI infrastructure sites, aiming to provide enough computing power to support further AI developments.

A report from the Department of Energy states that the electricity needed for data centres in the US has tripled over the past ten years, with the DoE forecasting that by 2028 data centres will be using up to 12% of the nation’s electricity.

The announcement echoes that of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s campaign to make the UK an innovation centre for AI.

Biden said: “[AI will] have profound implications for national security and enormous potential to improve Americans’ lives if harnessed responsibly, from helping cure disease to keeping communities safe by mitigating the effects of climate change.”

Biden’s push for AI infrastructure comes shortly after backlash against his new export rules on AI computer chips.

The current administration is proposing restrictions on the export of computer chips, attempting to balance national security concerns and the economic interest of the US. Should the order remain in place once Trump’s inauguration, it will affect 120 countries.
