UK to Prioritise AI Growth

By Patrick Mclean|13th January 2025

Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer is vowing to make the UK a ‘world leader’ in AI pioneering, aiming to drive economic growth.

The 50-point plan, which is now live on the Government website, outlines how Labour plans to use AI to bolster productivity in the public sector, as well as improve key economic factors.

It’s said that the public sector will be investing up to £14bn, bringing around 13,000 jobs, as well as providing a smaller number of technical roles once the initial foundation is complete.

Sir Keir said: “Artificial Intelligence will drive incredible change in our country. From teachers personalising lessons, to supporting small businesses with their record-keeping, to speeding up planning applications, it has the potential to transform the lives of working people.

“But the AI industry needs a government that is on their side, one that won’t sit back and let opportunities slip through its fingers. And in a world of fierce competition, we cannot stand by. We must move fast and take action to win the global race.”

The Government also aims to increase UK computing by 2030 by building new infrastructure in AI “growth zones”.

Tech leaders are welcoming Sir Starmer’s announcement, specifically Chris Lehane of OpenAI, who said: “The UK has an enormous national resource in the talent of its people, institutions and businesses which together, can leverage AI to advance the country’s national interest.”
